What to Watch Out For
Before we get into some of the services and benefits of Apple Rehab Farmington Valley, you should be aware that this facility has been fined for incidents with residents. In 2017, Apple Rehab Farmington Valley was fined $2,140 due to violations of the Connecticut General Statutes/Regulations for Connecticut State Agencies.
The first incident occurred with a resident who had cancer and experienced serious pain. This resident was on pain medications, but a total of six doses were not documented by staff members. These doses were likely not administered to the resident, worsening their pain symptoms.
In 2017, another incident occurred with a different resident. This resident had a shellfish allergy, which was known to the facility, but was served soup with shrimp in it. After taking a few bites, the resident realized that there was shrimp in the soup and notified staff members. They complained of some difficulty swallowing and were given allergy medications. No serious symptoms developed and the resident was monitored, but they should not have been served shellfish.
In another situation with a separate resident, choking occurred while eating. The resident was on a soft food diet and was served foods approved for this diet. The resident’s food was also properly cut for them, and they were sitting in a proper position to encourage proper chewing and swallowing. Despite this, the resident ended up choking and although staff members applied the Heimlich maneuver, the resident passed away.
There is some confusion as to whether one of the food items served to this resident (garlic bread) was appropriate or not. While bread was approved as a food on the soft food diet, staff members noticed that the garlic bread that evening was a little hard and difficult to cut. Some staff members believe that the bread should have been taken away from the resident as a result.
